Joseph Allen Shreibvogel, commonly known as Joe Exotic, was born on 5th March 1963 in Garden City, Kansas.
Joe Exotic spent his early childhood in Kansas until his family moved to Texas, where he enrolled at Pilot Point High School and graduated to join the Eastville Police Department.
He worked at the Police Department until he was promoted to the office of the Chief of the Minor Department. In 1985, Exotic was involved in a car crash. He was hit on the road by a vehicle that was not identified.

Not long after the accident, Joe Exotic moved to Kansas City, where he started managing a pet store.
He developed a liking for animals after he began handling lion cubs which had been brought to his neighbor’s home.
In 1986, Exotic returned to Texas, where he opened a pet store with his brother Wayne. They eventually closed it down and opened another one in 1987.
In 1997, Wayne was killed in an accident, and this forced Joe to sell the pet shop and move to Oklahoma with his family.
While in Oklahoma, he started a memorial park and named it Harold Wayne in memory of his brother.
He acquired his first animals in 2000, two abandoned tigers.
